Essential tips for purchasing ceiling fans

Ceiling fans are available in a wide range of sizes, styles, materials and also many advanced innovations in the current times. There are multiple factors which must be considered before purchasing best ceiling fans. Some of the major factors have been discussed here.

Indoor ceiling fans are designed for the interior of the house such as bedroom, bathroom, living room, etc. Such fans are not able to withstand weather elements. Hence they must not be installed in external spaces. Indoor ceiling fans specially designed for damp indoor rooms are also available in the market. These fans are called damp-listed fans which can be installed in bathrooms, laundry rooms and other high humidity rooms.

Outdoor ceiling fans are resistant against weather elements which make them suitable to be installed in outdoor spaces such as verandahs, patios or porches. Wet listed outdoor ceiling fans are even more robust in construction and can withstand high water exposure. Such fans are highly suited for outdoor spaces where water penetration is significant.

The size of the ceiling fan must be compatible with the size of the room. For rooms measuring 75 square feet, ceiling fans of 44″ or lesser sizes are considered suitable while for rooms measuring up to 350 square feet, ceiling fans of sizes ranging between 48″ and 58″ are recommended. For rooms measuring 350 square feet or more, ceiling fans of 60″ or more must be selected.

Mounting of the ceiling fan must be correct as per the height of the ceiling.

  • Flush mount ceiling fans do not require a drop rod for mounting and are directly mounted on the ceiling. Such fans are suitable when the ceiling height is less than 8 feet from the floor. They are perfect for small apartments.
  • For standard ceiling height of 8-9 feet, ceiling fan with drop rod standard 12 inches in length for mounting is suitable.
  • The extra-long mounting rod is required for mounting the ceiling fan if the ceiling height is greater than 9 feet, such as in large halls—the extra inches depending upon the ceiling height. For example, if the ceiling height is 10 feet, the drop rod should be 18 inches in length.
  • For sloped ceilings, ceiling fans having adapters which adapt as per the angle of the ceiling are suitable.

The number of blades in a standard ceiling fan is 4-5. The accepted principle is that the ability of a fan to move air goes down with the increase in a number of blades.

Blade pitch is also an important determinant of a ceiling fan’s quality. It is the angle subtended by the tilt of a ceiling fan’s blade with a 180-degree horizontal plane. The correct blade pitch ensures the optimal circulation of air. The buyer must ensure that the ceiling fan has a blade of 12-15 degrees.

Handheld remote controls are also available for ceiling fans apart from conventional wall-mounted switches and regulators. The remote control is a good choice for ceiling fans located in large rooms with high ceilings.

Mobile app-enabled controls are also available for advanced ceiling fans.
