League of Legends Lecture

League of Legends is a complex video game with multiple layers and systems. In this class, students will explore the game through various lenses, including gameplay, eSports, and psychology.

The cinematic showcases some of the rich lore within League. It features Trendir’s battle with death, Yasuo’s confrontation with his past, and the backstory of twin aspects Kale and Morgana.
Basics

League is a 5v5 team-based strategy game where players control a champion with unique abilities. There are over 140 champions to choose from, and each has its own playstyle. The objective of the game is to destroy the other team’s base in the map called Summoner’s Rift.

To win games in League you need to have quality in-game IQ and strong mechanics. This is a fundamental lesson that NicoThePico will teach you as part of this course.

League has three phases: early game, mid game, and late game. During each phase you need to secure game-changing objectives and take down turrets. You also need to level up and gain gold to buy items. These items massively boost a champion’s power. This process of getting stronger throughout the game is known as “scaling”.
Mechanics

The ability to predict and respond to a champion’s mechanical abilities is essential to becoming a master player. Players must understand when to click a dying minion, when to teleport, and what the impact of their item choices will be. This chapter examines these and other mechanics that players need to know in order to play well.

Many users express a strong desire to see more unique mechanics added to the game. For example, some appreciate the complexity of Urgot’s W and wonder why more champions do not have similar mechanics. Ultimately, however, this type of gameplay variation can disrupt the balance of the game by driving champions to prioritize certain abilities over others. For this reason, it is important to balance the benefits of unique mechanics with the need for a balanced game.
PvP

PvP in League of Legends is a key element of the game. PvP games are a way to test out new champions, tactics and item sets in a more competitive environment than normal or ranked games. The goal of the game is to achieve primary objectives, such as destroying towers or capturing points, while avoiding secondary objectives, such as killing the opposing team. The team with the most points at the end of the match wins. Winning PvP games reward players with IP and experience.
